The weather has turned beautiful, the first prolonged hot summery spell since we arrived in the UK six years ago. In between enjoying the warmth and the sunshine, though, I have been crazy busy, both at home and at work. That, combined with the flu which I am slowly recovering from, means that I have not been knitting. In fact, I had a stretch of ten days in which I did not knit at all, not one stitch. On the eleventh day, I was walking across campus from a meeting, heading back to my office. I was feeling stressed out. I was feeling really, truly, majorly stressed out. As I said, I had been crazy busy and in fact had been at work until quite late three days in a row. But, truth be told, the stuff I was busy with was not particularly stressful. I decided to stop and have a coffee and soak up some sun.
As I sat there sipping my coffee, I could feel my knitting calling to me. I always have a project with me, and I swear, I could almost hear it saying “Knit me! You need me! Come on now, just fifteen minutes! DO it!” I pulled it out, and as I sat there in the sun sipping my coffee and knitting, I could feel peace settling around my shoulders. I could sense all of the stress just releasing and flowing away as my breathing slowed and my body relaxed. I started to smile and really tune into my environment and enjoy the sunshine. When, after fifteen minutes, I put my knitting away, all of the things I had been feeling stressed about just minutes earlier seemed to have shifted into an alternate reality. They were all still there, but it was as if I had undergone a shift in perspective and nothing seemed overwhelming anymore. Perhaps, I thought, I was feeling so stressed out BECAUSE I hadn’t been knitting.
I realized that I actually do need my knitting. You see, some people do yoga. Some people meditate Some do gardening. Some, who haven’t yet figured out their coping mechanism, self-medicate; they need a couple of gin and tonics when they get home to relax. For me, knitting IS my yoga. It makes me feel good. It relaxes me. It allows me to focus. That said, knitting outside on a warm summer evening WITH a gin and tonic can be pretty nice too…
This will be a post with lots of photos and few words. The entire crew here at Knitigating Circumstances has been felled by the flu all week, so words are not flowing freely. Despite this, however, I have managed to do all of the finishing on my Neon cardigan. The verdict: this is one fabulous knit!
The pattern, by Joji Locatelli, is really well-written and comprehensive. I have made few modifications: I knit the sleeves flat, added one set of hip increases (could have made more), and put in 12 buttons instead of 8.
Despite having made some really stupid (and fairly comical) wrong turns while knitting this (documented on these pages), this project turned out great. I really think it is the perfect summer cardigan.
This was my first time using Plucky yarn and I can’t say enough good words about it. I really like the feel of it – it has bounce and loft, but mostly I am crazy about this colour – Kissin’ Valentino. I definitely see some more Plucky in my future.
Until the last minute I didn’t think it would fit. In a postscript to my last post, describing my hilarious attempts to block this, I ended up re-blocking the whole thing. This did the trick. I won’t take it off until October!
It’s been two weeks since my last post. I went away on a fabulous family holiday during which I never even looked at the internet. Not once. We went to Lebanon and were completely blown away by the place – the people, the culture, the weather, the food, the landscape, the language. I loved it. I hope to write a post about it someday soon. But this is a post about how a knitter packs for a holiday, and the sometimes stupid things that entails.
We left for the airport on Saturday morning. I had been rushing around all week trying to get things tied up, both at work and at home, so that I could get everything done beforehand and enjoy my holiday. In the back of my mind all week, however, was the state of my Neon cardigan. You see, I had only 5 inches of one sleeve left to go, and then the finishing: sewing the sleeve seams and putting in the button bands. I wanted to be able to finish the cardigan in Lebanon and then be able to wear it there. It matched everything I wanted to pack, and it is the perfect summer cardigan.
This caused a dilemma, however. I wouldn’t be able to block it on holiday. We would be staying with family who I had never met. I knew that the floors in the house would be tiled, so I would probably need a bed to block it on. I didn’t want to wash a red sweater (one that was bound to seriously bleed the first time it was washed), wrap it up in towels, and then more towels, and then spread it out on someone’s bed and pin it and let it dry for a few days. That would be rude. (Ha! Ha! This is precisely what I did to my friend Teresa last year when I was on holiday and needed to block my Killybegs sweater; I arrived at her house and within 5 minutes I had the sweater in the sink and was borrowing armfuls of towels. But you see, I have known Teresa long enough to be rude!)
On the Friday evening before we left, while still having packing to do, I decided to try to finish the sleeve, and then block the sweater before we went. This meant that I would have to block it before I sewed the sleeve seams, which after great internal debate I figured would be OK. It also meant that I would be washing and blocking it at midnight before my morning flight. There is absolutely no way it would be dry in time. But we knitters have a way of justifying the stupid and impossible. So, I wasted a few hours that were really needed for other things and finished knitting the sleeve, and washed and blocked the sweater.
I had a cunning plan, you see. Emma has a very powerful hair dryer, with a cool air setting. I set my alarm clock for very early in the morning, and came downstairs, hair dryer in hand, with the intent of blowing cool air over it until it dried. I plugged in the hair dryer, turned it on high, and aimed it at a corner of the cardigan. And then the hair dryer blew up. I kid you not. THE HAIR DRYER BLEW UP! Little pieces of plastic drifted all over my lovely Neon sweater and smoke filled the air.
OK, by now any sane person would give this up as a lost cause, right? What did I do? I spent ten minutes picking pieces of plastic off the cardigan, and then pulled out all of the pins and carefully carried it on the towel outside. Remember it was still pretty early in the morning so the sun hadn’t carried into the back garden. I had to put it out in the front walkway. To make things worse, the wind was blowing like mad, and little petals from the trees were blowing around in the wind. The sweater would not stay in place.
So, I ran back in the house and grabbed two shoes, and ran back out, in my nightgown (did I forget to mention I was still in my nightgown?) and placed the shoes on the sleeves to try to hold the sweater in place:
I then frantically ran around alternately throwing things in suitcases, checking things off lists, turning off appliances, getting dresed, and running outside to check and make sure the cardigan hadn’t blown away. Soon enough, the taxi came, and of course my lovely Neon wasn’t dry. Did I give up? No. I ran to get a plastic bag, carefully folded Neon away and packed it in a suitcase. Yes, it is insane to put a partially damp, sort-of blocked sweater in a suitcase and take it on a plane. Any reasonable person would have left it at home to dry properly. (And I haven’t even mentioned the mountains of other knitting I had packed in my bags; it’s not like I wouldn’t have any other projects to work on.) When I got to Lebanon, I reasoned, I would set it out to finish drying, and then I would be able to knit up the button bands and do the finishing.
In the taxi, I turned to my daughter and said “Hey Emma, how would you like a brand new hair dryer?”
As a final note, I was so busy on my holiday that I didn’t knit on Neon at all. I forgot that finishing work took concentration and this was the kind of holiday for mindless knitting, if any. So Neon came back home in the same shape she left, only drier. And this has been my tale of how not to block a sweater.
It’s been awhile since my last Wearability Wednesday post. In that one, I discussed being so disillusioned with a garment, that I ripped it out and re-used the yarn. This month, I will switch tables and show you one of my all-time favorite knits, something I wear ALL OF THE TIME and love to pieces. This is the beautiful pullover, Ormolu, designed by Barbara Gregory for Twist Collective.
The photo above was taken by Emma when I finished knitting the pullover in February 2011. I really think the fit is lovely. These days, knitters tend to make fitted sweaters by knitting them in one piece and trying on constantly while knitting to fit; this one is knit the old fashioned way – in four pieces, which are then seamed together. This means that fitting it properly entails taking very thorough measurements, taking your time to make and wash a proper sized gauge swatch, using a tape measure obsessively throughout, trusting in yourself, trusting the designer, and keeping your fingers crossed.
(I can tell that these photos were taken two years ago, because although I wear Ormolu constantly, I can no longer zip up the skirt in the above photo; alas!) You can see in the above some of the lovely shaping details along the sides. Many fitted sweaters today I think look beautiful from the front and gap in the back; this one truly fits, from every angle. The moral – Knitters, don’t be afraid to seam!
The pattern is very well written. Barbara Gregory has done a lot to promote this slip stitch colourwork technique, in which only one colour is used on a row. It produces intricate-looking mosaic colour patterns with considerably less work than Fair Isle. This is the same knitting technique, by the way, used in the Brick sweater which I knit for Doug. If you want to do colourwork but Fair Isle intimidates you, I would urge you to try this technique first. My favorite part of the pattern is the neckline, in which a third colour is incorporated, to really great effect.
And, because we knitters always want to see the reverse side, here you go:
I used Rowan RYC Cashsoft DK in purple and navy. I had a difficult time picking out a colour for the neck detail. The yarn I ended up using (which unfortunately, I failed to either write down or keep the ball band) looked fairly brown and boring on its own. I was aiming for gold, but all of the yellows looked too brass, and the browns looked too, well, brown. So, I tried a lot of options: here are three of them:
I am glad that I went with the golden hue. When knit with the navy and purple, it really looks like gold, and makes me think of fine metalwork. This was obviously the inspiration for Barbara, as you can tell from the pattern’s name. From Wikipedia:
Ormolu/ˈɔrməluː/ (from French or moulu, signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercuryamalgam to an object of bronze.
It took me 11 months to knit this from cast on to cast off; quite a lot of time. Despite this, it is not a difficult sweater to knit. Much of this was due to emotional turbulence. This is the sweater that I was knitting when my sister called me to tell me that my Dad was dying. I sat by his bedside, alternately holding his hand and knitting this sweater. Afterwards, I found it hard to work on, and put it away for a few months before pulling it out again. This is one of the things that I like most about knitting, that each piece has memories attached to it, of where you were in life while knitting it. I wear this sweater all of the time, and every time I pull it on, I think of my Dad. I think that’s pretty cool.
I made a few minor modifications to the pattern, which I detailed on my Ravelry page, but I will copy them here, for those of you who may be interested:
I knit all the right side stitches – no purl bumps.
I added waist shaping. The pattern called for 6 waist decreases, followed by six increases for the bust. I made 8 pairs of decreases, followed by 10 pairs of increases. This means that I had 4 extra stitches on each side when I got to the bust, making it midway between the size 38 1/2 and the size 41 1/2. This gave the sweater zero ease.
I loved the garter stitch ridges that Barbara designed; however, I found that they wouldn’t stop rolling. After knitting about 6 inches of the front, I decided that I wouldn’t be happy with the edges rolling up all of the time, and I ripped out and started again, this time using seed stitch instead of garter. I also used seed stitch for the neckband.
I made it longer. I was aiming for an extra inch and a half, but somehow ended up with an extra 3 inches. I started the decrease pairs on row 24 instead of row 14 of Chart 2.
I fear that I have gotten carried away here. This post is a Wearability Wednesday post, after all, and here I am blathering on about construction details. However, this pullover pre-dates my blog so I thought it necessary to give a little background on the project itself before I move on to the important issue of Wearability.
As I stated above, I wear this a lot. I dress it up; I dress it down. I wear it to work; I wear it grocery shopping; I wear it to go on long walks. This is fabulously easy one-stop dressing, and is the thing that I reach for when I want to look good but don’t have time to fuss. I often wear it with jeans, or with a denim skirt. I usually pair it with navy trousers and heels, as in the photo at the top of this post.
I have a necklace that looks perfect with it, as if they were designed to wear together. Interestingly, this necklace is the first piece of jewelry I ever bought for myself. I was a teenager when I bought it. It is a reproduction of a piece from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. I used to live a block away from the museum and I had a yearly entry pass; I practically lived there. I saw this piece in the museum shop and had to have it; at the time it was an expensive purchase. That was over thirty years ago, and I still love this piece. (I wish that all of my purchases were so timeless.)
My only issue with the wear of this sweater is that it pills. It is not an out of control pilling; but definitely there. The yarn (which has been discontinued) is a blend of Merino, microfibre and cashmere. I am not sure which yarn I would use if I were to knit it again, but I would definitely check on the pilling issue before I picked one.
If I had to choose the 5 most successful pieces in my knitted wardrobe, Ormolu would definitely be among them. I think its success is due to the fact that it is comfortable and warm, easy to accessorize, and has a wow! factor while still being very un-fussy. The photos in this post have been taken over three winters, and during that time I have never lost interest in this piece.
I once had a few sessions with a stylist about exploring my personal style. I wore the Ormolu pullover to one of these sessions, and she told me that it would look fabulous with a camel skirt. I don’t know why this never occurred to me. I have been looking for the perfect camel skirt to wear with it ever since. In fact, I have put off doing a Wearability Wednesday post about Ormolu, in the hopes of finding the skirt first so I can show you what a brilliant combination it is. I want a wool camel skirt that comes to just above the knee, with box pleats front and back. Some day, I will find just the right skirt and maybe that will necessitate a further post, but until then, I will keep the navy vibe going.
We are about to depart on a family holiday, so I won’t post on the weekend, but will return soon after a week in the sun!
I have never been good at following the crowd. While my friends drooled over Jane Austen, I was obsessed by Edith Wharton and Henry James. When the whole world was disco dancing, I was busy folk dancing. At college, when ripped jeans and tank tops were de rigeur, I was in skirts and heels. When I had to travel to Barcelona or Bilbao to buy a cute dress at Desigual, I was so there; now that I can buy it on the high street in my local town (or, God forbid, on Amazon) it has lost much of its appeal.
When I was young, knitting was not a cool thing to do, not by a long shot. I took my knitting everywhere. Now, however, knitting is trendy. I still find myself reluctant to follow the crowd, but I am not about to put down my needles and take up book binding just to buck the trend. These days, with knitting, this rebelliousness asserts itself in my reluctance to jump on trends. As an example, I have never knit a sock, though for a few years sock knitting was THE thing. I even went to a three-day sock knitting workshop (an expensive one), where I managed to finish a sweater, cast on a skirt, and knit about 2″ of a sock. I can be wildly excited about something, but as soon as I realize that everyone else is doing it, my enthusiasm tends to wane. Yes, I know, this is terribly infantile.
This is a rather roundabout way of introducing my topic: the Colour Affection Shawl, by Vera Välimäki (pictured above). This shawl was originally a collaboration between the designer, Veera, and Sarah Dimond of The Plucky Knitter. The yarn was produced by Sarah as a kit and sold with the pattern. For the first few months, the pattern was only available as part of a kit. Sarah is known for her sense of colour and her ability to put together interesting combinations.
I saw the pattern on a forum, which announced that Sarah had put together 20 or so different colour combinations, and that these would be put up for sale at a particular time on the internet. I looked at my watch; they would go on sale in minutes. I could tell from the forum, and from what I knew of The Plucky Knitter, that they would sell out instantly. I would be lucky to get one. I had barely any time to choose a kit. I looked through the options, picked one out, and then asked Emma which she liked. She picked out the same one, Parlour Games, I figured that was a sign, the sale went live, I pulled out my credit card and snagged a kit. I later found out that I was in a lucky minority. Hundreds of unhappy knitters missed a chance; they truly did sell out almost instantly. Sarah went on to put up another round of kits, and then another.
I wrote a post when I got the yarn, so pleased by the absolutely beautiful colours. Here is a photo Emma took:
I had a few projects on the go at the time, so I waited a bit to start knitting. Then, I encountered a bit of a snag. I decided to wind the yarn into balls. I do all of my winding by hand. I started with the pink yarn. (The colours are called Faded Grandeur, Elegant Elephant and En Vogue, but for the purpose of this post, they will be green, grey and pink.) This was also around the time that I had an issue with colour bleeding in a different project, which I discussed in this post. This was a sweater knit in a slip stitch pattern in red and white. The red dye bled and the project was useless. I ended up throwing it away. I realized belatedly that I should have washed the pink yarn, while it was still skeined, to make sure that all of the dye was released. Once I had it balled, I couldn’t wash it, and I was very reluctant to re-skein it for the purpose of washing. This is a long way of saying, that I began to fret about whether the pink would bleed, and so once again put the Colour Affection shawl on hold.
Now, while this was going on, the shawl began to be very popular. Sarah couldn’t produce enough kits to meet demand. Then, the pattern was made available independently and knitters started knitting it in lots of different yarns as well. Some knitters made 5 or 6 or 7 of them. I began to lose my interest. And all of this was before Stephanie Pearl-McPhee stepped into the picture. Yes, the famous Stephanie of the Yarn Harlot, knit blogger extraordinaire, wrote a post about the popularity of the Colour Affection Shawl at a knit workshop she had attended, and before you could say boo, thousands of knitters were making it. I think this is great for Veera, who makes lovely designs, and great for Sarah, who makes lovely yarn. However, it immediately made my infantile inner knitter say “I don’t want to make that.” Why, oh why, do I do this? Wouldn’t it be more sensible to think “Thousands of knitters can’t be wrong.” But the honest truth is, the more Colour Affections (CAs) I saw on the internet, the less I wanted to make them.
It may not just be it’s popularity which has cooled my interest; I am astonishlingly fickle. However, as the number of CAs on Ravelry fast approaches 10,000 (yes, 10,000 – you go, Veera!) I find myself searching for some other use for the yarn. Now that I am knitting with Plucky yarn for the first time (for my Neon cardigan), I am even more determined to find a good pattern for these three beautiful skeins. I have thought about using them separately, for example knitting a pair of mitts from the pink, and maybe a cowl with the green and grey, but one of the things that attracted me to this kit in the first place is how great these three look together. So, for the benefit of my curious readers, here are my current options (those of you who are not curious, can stop reading here – though you would miss some pretty photos.)
I love the pattern Pop Spots by Juju Vail. It is becoming popular as well, though not quite on the same scale (yet) as the CA.
I have thought of making this in the grey, with pink spots and a green border. This pattern is one of those rare ones that Emma and I disagree on. Emma doesn’t like it and thinks it’s too old for me. I have seen some great ones, in terrific colours, and find the spot pattern really appealing. On reflection, however, I think I prefer the Pop Spots in a softer yarn with a bit of a halo.
Veera had published a new pattern, which being new has not yet taken off like the CA, which I think is very cute:
This one is called Happy Street. I would knit it in the grey, with the stripes in the green and pink. You can see why Veera’s shawl patterns are so popular; she uses colour and garter stitch and simple shapes to great effect. In fact, my very first post on this blog was to show off my Stripe Study shawl, a Veera design.
There are two other shawl patterns that I think would look fabulous with this yarn. Each of them uses four colours of yarn, however, instead of three, so I would have to obtain another skein (probably in a darker grey). One is called All the Shades of Truth by Laura Aylor, and I think it is stunning:
It is beautiful in these neutral colours, but imagine it in the fabulous grey, green and pink I have, with deep charcoal borders. So simple, but so beautiful. Laura first attracted my attention years ago with her Lizard Ridge blanket pattern; lately, she is making so many beautiful things. Please go check her out.
The other pattern is called Eden Prairie and is designed by Nancy Whitman. This one was inspired by a piece of Prairie-style stained glass:
Well, dear readers, what do you think? Should I ignore my rebellious inner voice and knit the Colour Affection? Should I knit one of these other lovely shawls? Should I hold out for another pattern down the line? Also, if anyone has experience with Plucky yarns, should I re-skein the pink yarn and wash out the dye?
My knitting mojo has been on holiday the past few weeks, hopefully somewhere warm with pina coladas and a pool. Life has been somewhat hectic, and when I have had some down time I’ve spent it with my nose in a book. When I do pull my needles out, I’ve been working on Neon. As it is a summer cardigan, and summer is with any luck on its way, it makes sense to concentrate on this one.
I am making Neon in a really great red yarn, hand dyed by Sarah of the Plucky Knitter. The colour is hard to capture on camera, it is really red without orangy tones, and has a lot of depth to it. It is called Kissin’ Valentino, and especially in the simple lace of this pattern, looks crisp and elegant, with a bit of sexy siren thrown into the mix. I can’t wait to wear it with a linen blouse and navy heels. I have a feeling it will be the perfect summer cardigan.
After the coldest spring in over 50 years, we have had two fairly nice weekends in a row, which has led to some peaceful knitting in the back garden. The wisteria is blooming, and the field on the other side of our fence is planted in rapeseed just about to burst into full bloom.
Last weekend, I woke up early, pulled on my Killybegs cardigan, grabbed my coffee and sat out in the garden knitting. As the sun warmed up, I shrugged off the Killybegs, and draped it over the back of the chair. I went in to get another coffee, and when I came outside, Emma was standing with her camera, taking photos of the chair draped in the lovely green Donegal wool of Killybegs and the vibrant red of the Neon. Just looking at the photos makes me happy.
I have managed to finish knitting the body of the cardigan. It is hard to judge the fit, because even though it is knit in one piece and I can thus try it on, it also is lace and will need a really heavy block to open up the lace pattern. What this means is that it seems impossibly small right now and I find it hard to imagine that I will ever be able to button it. I have to trust in the miracle of blocking (and remember that I have two daughters who would not be overly upset if it ended up being too small for me.)
I followed the pattern almost exactly for the body, only adding one extra set of hip increases, but I am winging the sleeves. The lace used on Neon is a simple 2-row repeat, and even though the sweater is knit in one piece, because it is a cardigan it is knit back and forth in rows. This means that the pattern has a knit side and a purl side. Joji has written the pattern, however, so that the sleeves are knit in the round. There are obvious advantages to knitting this way, primarily that you don’t have to seam the sleeve, but for this pattern, because of the way the lace is formed, knitting in the round causes more problems than it solves.
Joji Locatelli is a new-ish designer, but a very professional and thorough one, and she is careful to address this problem. She gives detailed descriptions of how to knit the lace in the round, and even provides links to a video demonstration. There is no denying, however, that this lace pattern is much simpler and more straight forward to knit back and forth than in the round. In addition to to the technical aspects of knitting it without purl rows, which involves continually passing stitches back and forth between the needles, there is the very real problem that many knitters have encountered, which is that they end up with a different gauge for the lace when it’s knit in the round. If you look at Joji’s Ravelry group, you will find many long discussions involving ripping, and changing needle sizes, and trying alternative ways to get the lace to work in the round.
To me, the answer is not only simple, but obvious: knit the sleeves straight, and then seam them. I must point out that I am not the only one to do this; a number of other knitters have done so, and commented on the forums. A couple of them asked Joji outright about knitting the sleeves flat and I found her responses very enlightening. I took a screen shot for you:
I think this reinforces the fact that she is a thoughtful designer, and responsive to her customers, as well as being cheerful and supportive. The thing I found most interesting about this, however (and why I put them up here) is her comment that knitters today want patterns to be “seamless” and her struggle with the fact that in order to sell patterns you need to make them seamless, even in cases where a little seam would actually make things easier. I find this rather disturbing. It makes me want to say “Suck it up, knitters! Sure, some of us prefer knitting seamless, and some of us prefer to knit in pieces. But as a knitter, you should really know how to do both and suit the technique to the project!” It is like those knitters who refuse to do crochet, and are rather adamant about it, even though sometimes a bit of crochet edging is just exactly what your knitting needs. I think we should all try to be broadminded, and have fun mastering new techniques. We are still allowed to have our favorites, of course, but why should we restrict ourselves like this in our pursuit of a hobby? Aren’t we restricted enough in other things we have no choice in? (I promise, dear reader, this is the end of my rant.)
I included Joji’s second comment, by the way, because if you are going to knit the sleeves flat, please don’t forget to cast on the extra stitches under the arm. I could so easily have forgotten that; thanks Joji for steering me right!
The sun has peeked out again and I will run out and take advantage of it. Here’s hoping my knitting mojo gets tired of pina coladas and comes home to challenge my books to a showdown.
I am astounded by the fact that this is my 100th post! It’s hard to believe but I have somehow managed to keep at this for quite a while now, and have reached this milestone. I thought that I would take this opportunity to say a few words about the genesis of the blog and it’s trajectory. I was pushed into blogging by my daughter, Emma. I didn’t think that I had the skills to do this (I am something of a techno-phobe.) I also didn’t think I had that much to say (in hindsight this is seriously funny). I really didn’t think anyone would be interested in anything I did manage to say. Emma was convinced that I was wrong, and she wore me down over a long period of time. In the beginning, I wrote the posts, and Emma did all of the technical work for the blog – she is responsible for the layout and design. Emma also took total creative control over all of the photographs, and served as fashion stylist. Both Emma and I have been exceedingly picky about each and every post from the very beginning; she would not accept a poor quality photo, and any of those you may find in my archives are ones I managed to sneak past her.
Anyone who reads this blog regularly will know that it is to some extent a family project. Doug and Leah, while not having starring credit, contribute enormously to this effort. Neither one has ever complained when I ask them to take endless photos, or to model for them. One, or both of them, reads over every post before I hit the publish button, and provides unflinchingly honest feedback. They hold off until late to put on a family movie, because I have to read through a post for the 17th time to make sure there are no typos, and then read it an 18th time just for good measure. They put up with my endless knitting commentary with good cheer.
Looking back over the past 99 posts, I certainly have favorites. The Retrospective Knits posts that we put together while on holiday in Arizona were really fun for the whole family and we all enjoyed making them immensely. This was a three part series, but the first is my favorite. I also like the post A Tale of Two Falkenbergs, which is a history of my knitting over the decades. Emma wrote a very funny post about photographing knitting, Move Over Mom, which I love. I am also very fond of the Wearability Wednesday series. The most popular posts that I have done, on the other hand, (in terms of hits) are a post where I talked about how to do German Short Rows, and a post about copyright issues involving Kate Davies and her Owls sweater.
Last August, Emma moved to another continent to start university and her role in the blog diminished. This means that I had to learn how to do all sorts of tech-y things by myself, thus demonstrating that you can teach an old dog new tricks. Though Emma’s day-to-day contributions to the blog have been consumed by her busy and totally cool life away from home, she continues to be my sounding board in all sorts of ways.
So, what’s new for the blog over the next 100 posts? On a personal note, I have big changes in store. In August, Leah will also be heading off to university; like her sister, she will be in Canada. This means an empty nest for Doug and me, about which I am already feeling melancholic. I have also, somewhat crazily, decided to mark my empty nest by going back to school part-time while continuing to work full-time. I would have thought, after finishing my PhD 20-some years ago, that nothing could ever make me enroll as a student again, but for some time now I have been toying in the very back of my mind with getting an MBA. If any time would be right for this move, it would be now. So, starting in October, I will have some pretty serious commitments on my time. I worry that they will interfere both with my knitting, and with my blogging, but as I find each of these activities rewarding, I will try to keep it all in balance.
I also plan to take my knitting in new directions. Emma and I have been trying our hand at designing sweaters. We have a number of designs worked out on paper, and I hope that later this year, I will take needles to yarn and start knitting some of them up. When that happens, I will blog about the process, in particular about our unique design collaboration. It turns out that Emma and I work well together in this respect – we have different skills to bring to the endeavor and a very good way of pulling the best out of each other. With any luck, we will soon be incorporating some design elements into these pages.
I will definitely continue with the Wearability Wednesday posts. These are fun and interesting, and I think informative for knitters. I have two of them lined up now for June and July. I recently wrote my first book review, and I may incorporate more of those. Also in the planning are a series of posts based around my collection of knitting magazines from the 1950s – 1970s.
Now a slight switch of topics – after my last post, in which I mentioned I had been nominated for two Sugar Sweet blogging awards and a Liebster award, I discovered that even earlier (a month ago) I had been nominated for a Liebster award by Helen Knits and had somehow, don’t ask me how, managed to miss it. I can’t believe this! Seriously, Helen is awesome! Her sweaters are fabulous, her photos amazing and her website really cool. Her photos are taken by her husband, James, who is a seriously great photographer and always makes Helen look terrific (he is a professional photographer and web designer and a good one). Please, go check out her site, and thank you Helen for nominating me.
Also, just as I published the previous post, I was nominated for yet another Liebster award by brown bird vintage. Thank you; I have really enjoyed the opportunity to read your blog. I am completely thrilled to have suddenly been getting so much recognition from fellow bloggers and for the opportunities it presents to get to know new blogs (but secretly hope that the award season is drawing to an end, so we can all get back to knitting and chatting about knitting.)
I thank everyone who has supported me in this endeavor, both by putting up with me and by reading the blog. If I don’t run out of things to say (which is highly unlikely) I expect to be here for my 200th post.
The blogging world has lately been abuzz with awards. I think there are many categories of blogging awards, but the ones I am talking about here are given by bloggers to bloggers. They have a format whereby your blog gets nominated, and then you in turn are supposed to nominate others. They come with a set of rules, which often morph over time, regulating how many blogs you nominate, and sometimes a set of questions you are supposed to answer. As my daughter Leah put it, “They are chain mail for bloggers!” Exactly. Now, I have never been one for chain mail, and if anyone was ever going to wreck the chain on a chain mail letter, it would be me.
However, the purpose behind these awards is to recognize bloggers whose work you admire. As an opportunity to spread the word about blogs, particularly smaller or newer blogs, this is a method that works well. This week, I have been nominated for not one, but three, of these awards! It is lovely to have this recognition from my fellow bloggers. I didn’t know any of the blogs who nominated me, and this has given me a chance to go check them out. This has been fun. I send a big thank you to Yarn tales at Hill Creek who nominated me for a Liebster Award and to whatzitknitz and The secret life of a crafter, both of whom nominated me for a Super Sweet Blogger Award.
I cannot help but ponder that if everyone who receives one of these awards in turn nominates another 11, or 13, or x-many blogs, in very short order every blogger on the planet will have a bucketload of them (I am surrounded by statisticians all day). So, I send my thanks to my readers, including those of my readers who are bloggers themselves; I am pleased that you find my scribblings informative and that you come back here occasionally to see what I am up to. But I also take these awards with a grain of salt; they are all about spreading the word, and in that sense, all power to them. I have to admit that I have been so busy writing my blog the last 18 months (and doing the knitting that forms a large basis of it’s content) that I don’t have all that much time to read blogs these days.
Since I am so bad at following directions, I will reciprocate simply by pointing out a few blogs that I like to read. Here are five blogs that span the range from very popular with big readerships to very small, and cover a range of topics (I present them alphabetically). If readers are in favor of the idea, I might repeat this exercise occasionally.
1. Advanced style. When I wrote a post recently about style and ageing, one of my readers (thanks, Lea!) sent me a link to this blog. Ari Seth Cohen takes photos of stylish and creative older people, many of them impromptu photos he takes of people he spies on the streets. This blog is fantastic! Most of the older women (and men) he photographs have more style in their little finger than a whole catwalk full of celebrities have put together.
2. blairistan. Blair is a great knitter. She has very similar tastes in sweaters to mine. I have been really enjoying Blair’s posts this year because she recently moved from the US to England (in fact, she lives very close to me, though we have never met). And, in a way that reminds me very much of me when I first moved to Europe 20 years ago, she travels as much as she can. So at the same time as I chart her progress through a pile of gorgeous sweaters, I can watch her model them in charming UK villages, in Paris, in Malta, and all over the continent. Fun!
3. Brain pickings. This is a wildly popular blog that is hard to describe. It is about psychology, culture, art, books, science and design. I found this through a discussion at work with colleagues (my day job is in the cognitive neuroscience field). This blog is the work of Maria Popova, who calls it a “human-powered discovery engine for interestingness”. I dare you to read this blog and not come away with ten books you absolutely must read now.
4. Kate Davies designs. I love Kate’s blog. I love her designs. Kate is a scholar, and has a huge wealth of knowledge about the history of knitting, and about social aspects of knitting and other needlework. Kate doesn’t need me pointing you in her direction; she is one of the big players in the knitting blog community. The thing I love best about Kate’s blog, however, is how much it makes me want to be in Scotland. The Scottish Tourist Board should put Kate on salary. Her photographs and commentary of Scotland are fantastic!
5. Knitted notes. Ella subtitles this blog “knitting and blogging in Italy in times of economic crisis”. As you can guess from that description there is a lot more than knitting here. The first thing I love about this blog is that Ella writes each post in English and Italian. I love to read blogs in other languages, and I love that Ella takes the time and effort to do this. She documents her knitting and designing process, complete with beautiful drawings of her designs. She also writes with passion and humor about politics and feminism. And to top it all off, each weekend she watches and reviews an old movie.
Well, that’s enough blog chat for now. It is cold and dark and rainy out, which means it’s a perfect time to knit!
In February, I finished knitting my Venetian Audrey sweater for Emma. Since Emma was in Vancouver (and it wouldn’t fit me or Leah), I published a post with unmodelled shots. Emma is now back home for the summer, so I am happy to be able to bring you some modelled photos. (Lots of modelled pictures; this will be a photo-heavy post).
I blogged about this sweater quite a bit during both the planning and the knitting; you can find these posts here. I actually found it quite nerve-wracking to knit this without Emma around to try it on. As the sweater has a huge amount of negative ease built into it, and the ribbing makes it hard to measure properly, I spent many hours with a tape measure and a frown, trying to size it properly.
As you can see here, the fit is fabulous. I must admit, however, that when I sent it to Emma, I hadn’t yet blocked it. I wasn’t sure it needed it and didn’t want to make a mistake in the blocking; I really needed to see it on her before I could judge appropriately how much blocking it needed, if any. I was kind of annoyed that Emma didn’t send me any photos of her wearing it. When she came home and I complained, she pointed out that she thought it perhaps had need of a little tweaking. (Emma has very exacting tastes; on the other hand, she is invariably right about these things.) The sweater has really benefitted from a good block. I didn’t stretch the ribbing out at all, but I pinned the lace out, and added a good three inches to the sleeves and two to the body. (I knit the sleeves a few inches longer than the pattern called for, and then blocked them out even farther. If you plan to knit this pattern, don’t be afraid to build in lots of negative ease, and add lots of length.)
As readers of this blog may recall, I re-wrote the pattern for this sweater. First, the pattern as written is knit in pieces and seamed. Though I don’t normally mind this type of construction, it really didn’t seem to make sense for Audrey. So, I knit the pullover in the round, bottom-up; knitting the sleeves in the round on DPNs and then attaching them at the yoke, and knitting the yoke in one piece.
I also re-sized the pattern. This is because, as I have pointed out here many times before, Rowan patterns run big. If you think you are a size 12, you should knit your Rowan pattern in a size 8. Since Emma is already at the smallest size, I had to do quite a bit of math to get the sweater to fit.
Audrey has beautiful shaping details. The waist decreases, knit into the 2×2 ribbing, are gorgeous. They are very architectural, with columns of ribbing moving in and out across the canvas of the sweater.
The yoke and neckline are also beautifully shaped. The line of the neck is elegant, sweeping, striking. The lace is subtle; it is a garter stitch lace, which gives it a lot of texture. We blocked out the peaks of the lace pattern to give it an undulating edge.
Emma wears it here with jeans and heels, but it is easy to dress up or down. Last year, I wrote a post about my original Audrey in which I showed how easy it is to style it in different ways, and also how flattering it is to many different body types; you can find that post here.
I knit mine in Rowan Calmer, but the sweater is much more elegant knit in the Madelinetosh DK. The colour is very rich, and the ribbing controls the tendency to pool; I didn’t need to alternate skeins.
I am really happy with this one. I think the fit came out just right, I love the colour, the yarn is soft and warm, the style is sexy and classy, and it looks fabulous on Emma (even when caught on candid camera – hehe!).
I am knitting along on two projects at the same time lately, my Exeter jacket and my Neon cardigan. Both are being knit for me (I am so selfish right now)! Exeter is a fabulous double-breasted jacket knit with tons of cable-y goodness:
That’s a closeup of the back. The cables are intricate and beautiful, with lace integrated into the cabling. It is fun to knit but slow-going and tricky. Although I have mostly internalized the pattern by now, I still need to concentrate. The Neon, on the other hand, once I got beyond my initial stupidity (documented here) is easy and takes little thought. It is good TV knitting, or holding-a-conversation knitting.
Depending on what else I am doing at the time, I am switching back and forth between the two, sometimes quite literally. Last weekend, when we had pleasant weather, I sat in the garden knitting. When I was by myself, I worked on Exeter; as soon as someone joined me I would put the Exeter down and pick up Neon. As soon as I was by myself again, I switched back. While the jacket will likely still take months to finish, the Neon is coming along quickly. I am just a few rows short of where I will separate off the sleeves and then it will move even faster.
Of course, if I could bring myself to ignore all those luscious cables for a few weeks, I could whip this out super quick, because everyone knows that two projects are slower than one. I can’t do it though. There is something absolutely hypnotic about watching the progression of the cables across the back piece of the jacket. How could anyone resist?
The Neon, while being an easy and intuitive knit once you get started, is still keeping my interest intellectually because of it’s construction. Knitters today are really moving towards knitting top-down seamless sweaters. While this has the obvious advantage that you can try the sweater on as you knit, I have never thought the shoulders are properly fitted using a top-down approach. With either a raglan sleeve or a yoke construction, the shoulder is never as neat as with a properly inset sleeve. Recently, a number of new methods have been developed for shaping a better shoulder while knitting top-down and seamless. One of these is the Contiguous Method, developed by Susie Myers. Many designers are now incorporating this method into their designs. I have wanted to knit one for awhile. When I saw that Neon, designed by Joji Locatelli, incorporates a contiguous shoulder, it moved to the top of my to-knit list.
As you can see from the above photo, the shoulder resembles a set-in-sleeve, in terms of its shaping and general architecture. However, it is knit in one piece with no seams. I think my execution is not perfect, but I will fix that up in the blocking. So far, I am really liking this.
The Neon is going to need some serious blocking, both to get it to fit (it’s a bit snug) and to get the lace to pop. It really is a lovely pattern and a fun knit. Joji is meticulous in her instructions. If you are looking for a summer cardi, I would recommend it.
In the meantime, our short glimpse of spring has disappeared. I was shivering in the cold and rain while taking these shots. And the wind tried to make off with Exeter:
Never fear, the wind and I had a tussle, but I won. I am now enjoying the indoors, cooking up a storm (butter chicken and spicy eggplant) and sneaking a row in here and there.
