Knitting with penguins

In my last post, I mentioned that I was off to see penguins.  Given that I once wrote a post called Knitting with Elephants, I thought I would put up a fast post on Knitting with Penguins.  I am sitting in the lounge about to fly back home and this seems like a fun way to pass the time!

We went down to Boulders Beach, south of Cape Town, a magical beach where African Penguins and people share the beach and the water.  There are thousands of penguins up and down the beach, running around in the grass, and standing on rocks in the sun:

Of course, I had to take out my knitting, and knit with penguins (as you do)!

Here is a close-up which shows the brilliant colours in the fair isle hat I am knitting.

We saw lots of adult penguins with chicks:

I love this photo where the two chicks appear to be making jokes behind their dad’s back:

This little one has lots of character:

I’m off to cold and dark England now, but before I left I made sure to check for penguins under the car:

      • It does sound like fun! Knitting at a beach with penguins would be too awesome to resist, even as a photo opportunity 🙂 Is knitting particularly common where you were? I know it’s pretty much worldwide, at least to an extent. But I’m pretty sure it’s much less common some places.

  1. Penguins!! They’re so cute, I’ve always wanted to see some (outside of a zoo). That hat is gorgeous too, I love the combination of the red/orange and the navy especially!

  2. Yes the penguins are really cute but what we really want to know is are you knitting that hat two-handed?! Everything you said about it in a recent post echoed my very limited experience of picking rather than throwing -I’m postponing having another go until the new year.

  3. Wow, what a great experience! Love your pictures, and that warning sign. You’re becoming quite the Fair Isle expert it seems, the hat is coming along nicely. Thanks for sharing your time with the penguins.

    • You’re welcome! I am really a neophyte at Fair Isle, but I just love the play of colours. I am totally happy with my hat and have the next few projects lined up. I am building up to a vest for Doug (and maybe about twenty pullovers for me!).
